Now on!

Victory for new German Team

A new German top-team for the 6-days was born yesterday in Dortmund: Andreas Beikirch and Andreas Kappes won the 61st 6-days in Dortmunds Westfalenhallen. For Kappes it was his 23rd 6-days win but the first in Dortmund, for Beikirch it was the first victory at all! They won the race one lap ahead of Aldag – Martinello, who had the highest pointsscore and who had been leading for most of the race. Risi – Betschart looked the first days very much like potential winners, but in the end they had to be content with 3rd place. Australian team O’Grady – McGrory didn’t manage to meddle so much as expected in the finale, they ended 4 th , two laps behind. Best of the next were Nothstein – Gilmore and Madsen – Rund, both 9 laps down. A little bunch of flowers for the boys from Berlin, Fulst – Müller, in 7th position, while we had expected at bit more from the Dutch Champions of Europe, Stam – Slippens. A hard time for British World Champion Chris Newton, but being a World Champion is no guarantee for an easy life in the 6-days, just ask Jens Lehmann… Also from Austrian Silver medals from the Worlds in Copenhagen you might have expected at little bit more.

Final classement in Dortmund:
1 Andreas Beikirch – Andreas Kappes (GER), 364 p., at 1 lap: 2 Rolf Aldag (GER) – Silvio Martinello (ITA), 447 p., 3 Bruno Risi – Kurt Betschart (SUI), 341 p., at 2 laps: 4 Stuart O’Grady – Scott McGrory (AUS), 365 p., at 9 laps: 5 Marty Nothstein (USA) – Matthew Gilmore (BEL), 260 p., 7 Jimmi Madsen (DEN) – Thorsten Rund (GER), 135 p., at 10 laps: 7 Guido Fulst – Andreas Müller (GER), 164 p., at 11 laps: 8 Danny Stam – Robert Slippens (NED), 183 p., at 12 laps: 9 Stefan Steinweg – Erik Weispfennig (GER), 101 p., at 18 laps: 9 Lars Teutenberg – Frank Kowatschitsch (GER), 164 p., at 23 laps: 11 Christian Lademann – Ronny Lauke (GER), 124 p., at 28 laps: 12 Franz Stocher – Roland Garber (AUT), 53 p., at 33 laps: 13 Gerd Dörich – Mario Vonhof (GER), 82 p., at 38 laps: 14 Chris Newton – Bradley Wiggins (GBR), 75 p., at 39 laps: 15 Jens Lehmann – Sebastian Siedler (GER), 76 p.

6-days in Dortmund, 31st October – 5th November:
Finale for four in Dortmund

No big changes in Dortmund before the finale to night: It will be a finale for four teams and the fact that the team Aldag – Martinello preserves their narrow lead in the overall after now four days doesn’t mean so much. Look at the points and you will see, that the other three top-team will very easy win a bonuslap at the start of the evening, and then Aldag – Martinello will be one lap down to Beikirch – Kappes and Risi – Betschart. Risi – Betschart made a very strong impression in the start of the race but have since then been more discreet. O’Grady – McGrory might be capable of doing more, than they have showed so far. And Beikrich – Kappes are very eager to have the victory in Dortmund, that will show to the world, that they are the right German top-team. Beikirch – Kappes won the first chase of the evening (45 km) ahead of Risi – Betschart, but in the REWE chase (60 miunutes) it was again Aldag – Martinello winning with all the four top-teams in the same lap. Also in the 1 km team time-trial nothing changed, once again Nothstein – Gilmore was the fastest team (57,30 sec.).

Two riders had to leave the race during the second last evening: Gerd Dörich and Frank Kowatschitsch. A new team was build with Mario Vonhof and Lars Teutenberg.

But both the Australians and the Germans are very close to a bonuslap, and then they will again be equal with the leaders. The second chase (60 minutes) was relatively quiet, ending up in a finale between the four leading teams with Aldag – Martinello winning, due to an excellent performance from Rolf Aldag, who showed allready on the second day, that he has found the legs for the smooth track-pedalling.

6-days in Dortmund, 31st October – 5th November:
Risi – Betschart when they are best…

(HE from Dortmund)

The first evening in the 6-days of Dortmund in the traditional Westfalenhallen is always something very special, even if it is this year not the first 6-days on the European calendar. The race started with an hour-chase and it was clear from the very start, that no presents were given during this 60 minutes. It took 12 minutes before the first lap-win was registrated, and the first team to go around for the lap was Bruno Risi – Kurt Betschart. The Alpen-Tornado has allready won the Dortmund 6-days four times in their career, and if they goes on as they did the first evening, they might very well achieve the fifth. During the whole evening we had the impression that Bruno was the strongest man on the track, and also Kurt was on his best.

The Swiss team won the opening hour on points ahead of Beikirch – Kappes, the onliest team who managed to stay in the same lap. But also the corageous Rolf Aldag presented himself very well, alongside with Martinello, and we will during the next days with interest watch the Australian combination O’Grady – McGrory. Also a positive remark for the German team Fulst – Müller, who lost only one lap during the first evening. The great defeated on the first night in Dortmund were the European champions from Amsterdam, Stam and Slippens, loosing three laps to the top-teams. Normally that means that they are allready eliminated in the fight for the top-rankings.

Marty Nothstein and Matthew Gilmore lost two laps during the first chase, but when it came to the 1 km team timetrial they were as expected far the best team. With 57,18 sec. they realized the second best time ever in Westfalenhallen, with O’Grady – McGrory second in 58,81 sec.

In the second dernyrace one of the pacemakers came to fall, which very seldom happens between those very experienced guys. Luckely with no severe consequenses, but the race had to be stopped for about 20 minutes.

Classement in Dortmund after 1st day:
1 Bruno Risi – Kurt Betschart (SUI), 56 p., 2 Andreas Beikrich – Andreas Kappes (GER), 50 p., at 1 lap: 3 Rolf Aldag (GER) – Silvio Martinello (ITA), 62 p., 4 Stuart O’Grady – Scott McGrory (AUS), 57 p., 5 Guido Fulst – Andreas Müller (GER), 15 p., at 2 laps: 6 Marty Nothstein (USA) – Matthew Gilmore (BEL), 42 p., 7 Jimmi Madsen (DEN) – Thorsten Rund (GER), 30 p., 8 Christian Lademann – Ronny Lauke (GER), 23 p., 9 Lars Teutenberg – Frank Kowatschitsch (GER), 21 p., 10 Stefan Steinweg – Erik Weispfennig (GER), 21 p., 11 Franz Stocher – Roland Garber (AUT), 11 p., at 3 laps: 12 Danny Stam – Robert Slippens (NED), 29 p., at 4 laps: 13 Chris Newton – Bradley Wiggins (GBR), 14 p., 14 Gerd Dörich – Mario Vonhof (GER), 3 p., at 5 laps: 15 Jens Lehmann – Sebastian Siedler (GER), 6 p.
