UCI Track World Cup/UCI- Coupe du Monde Piste- 1999
#4 - Fiorenzuola d'Arda, ITA - 27-29.08.1999
Women's Indvidual Pursuit
Competing in her second World Cup meeting of the
season, Leontien Zulaard-Van Moorsel (NED) narrowly beat Marion Clignet
(FRA) to claim the 3km Women's Individual Pursuit with a time of 3'40"09,
compared to Clignet's 3'40"93. Elena Tchalych (RUS) took third place with
a time of 3'42"23 in her ride against the World Cup leader, Rasa Mazeikyte
(LTU), who recorded 3'46"75.
In the World Cup overall, Mazeikyte extends her lead, moving up
fro 27 to 34 points. Zulaard-Van Moorsel jumps up from 7th to 2nd, now
on 20 points, while Erin Veenstra (USA) remains in third place on 16 points.
Women's Match Sprint
The indomitable world champion, Felicia Balanger
(FRA), won in two straight matches against Yan Wang (CHN). The Frenchwoman
recorded final 200m times of 12"01 and 12"44 in the two matches.
Chuihua Jiang (CHN) also needed only two matches to defeat Magali
Faure (FRA). Jiang's final 200m times were 12"21 and 12"30.
This is Ballanger's third consecutive Match Sprint win in the
three World Cup events she has attended this season. Thanks to this win
her overall score increases from 24 to 36 points. With her rivals Jennie
Reed (USA) and Tanya Dubnicoff (CAN) absent, the two riders on 23 and 22
points, respectively, Balanger's lead in the series increases even more
dramatically. These two North American riders retain their second and third
positions in the World Cup table, while Silvia Szabolcsi (HUN) who was
eighth at Fiorenzuola, remains in 4th overall on 19 points, but Yan Wang
and Oxana Grichina (5th) move up to 5th and 6th places with 18 points each.
Women's Points Race (20km)
Finishing with an accumulated total more than twice
that of second place, Elena Tchalych (RUS) easily won the Women's Points
Race. Antonella Bellutti (ITA) was second with 16 points, Magali Faure
(FRA) third with 15. This was the first time this year Tchalych has scored
points in a World Cup Points race.
With the absence of World Cup leader Olga Slioussareva (RUS) and
Mandy Poitras (CAN), third overall, Bellutti took over the lead position
with 28 points to the Russian's 20.
Men's Competition
Team Pursuit
Three riders from the Ukrainian team that won the World Championships
last year (Alexander Simoneko, Alexader Fedenko, Serguiy Matveyev) were
in the four-man outfit that won the pursuit with a time of 4'09"05, ahead
of second-placed Italy, with finished the 4km in 4'14"14.
Russia recorded 4'13"75 to claim third place in an easy win over
The Netherlands, which finished with a time of 4'22"41. The 12 points scored
for the win lifted Ukraine from ninth to second place overall in the World
Cup, on 22 points. France finished 7th, and gained 4 points, taking their
overall score to 32, which keeps them comfortably in the lead of the series.
Spain, which finished 5th, moved up from 4th to 3rd overall on 20 points.
Men's Individual Pursuit
Jens Lehman (GER) had an easy win over Alexei Markov
(RUS), the two riders recorded times of 4'25"82 and 4'30"36 respectively.
The match for third place, between Adrea Colinelli (ITA) and Alexander
Simonenko (UKR) was very close. Colinelli finished in 4'31"52, fractionally
faster than Simonenko's 4'31"92. In an unusual turn of events, this was
the first time any of these four riders have scored Individual Pursuit
points in the 99 World Cup series.
There is no change in the World Cup overall standings, with Mauro
Trentini (ITA) still on top with 18 points. Franco Marvilli (SUI) stays
in second place, but 8th place here increased his World Cup score from
14 to 17.
Match Sprint
Roberto Chiappa (ITA) found his best form of the
season and scored a convincing win over Laurent Gane (FRA). Chiappa recorded
11"11 and 11"05 in the two matches against the Frenchman. In the semi-final
against Van Eijden, Gane had shown good speed to record a 10"83 in winning
the first of their three matches.
Ainars Kiksis (LAT) overwhelmed the World Cup leader, Jan Van
Eijden (GER) to win in straight matches, recording 11"61 and 11"74.
Van Eijden remains on top of the World Cup ladder with 27 points,
but Chiappa, now on 26 is close behind in second place. Gane moves up from
5th= to 4th overall on 22 points.
Madison
The Australian duo of Aitken and McGrory narrowly
out-scored the Italians Martinello and Villa, 21 to 18, and so claimed
their first win of the World Cup.
The World Cup leaders, Argentina, were not present and the second-placed
Spanish team was off form. But these two teams remain at the top of the
World Cup ladder, with 28 and 25 points, respectively. Australia now moves
up to third overall in the Madison World Cup with 19 points.
Men's Points Race 30km
In collecting his first win for the World Cup series,
Silvio Martinello (ITA) also collected his first World Cup points. Finishing
with 22 points, just ahead of Ho-Sung Cho (KOR) on 21, Martinello won a
close-fought race in which third-placed Jacob Piil (DEN) scored 19.
Vasyl Yakovlev (UKR) finished eighth, which was good enough to
give him the overall World Cup lead, on 15 points. He displaces Franco
Marvulli (SUI) and Kouji Yoshi (JPN), who were in equal first place.
Olympic Sprint
A win for the British team of Craig McLean, Chris
Hoy and Jason Queally in the final over Spain's trio of Jose Manuel Morino,
Diego Ortega and Jose Antonio Escuredo was enough to push Great Britain
up to the top of the World Cup ladder. Greece beat Italy to finish third
