Men's 4000m Individual Pursuit

All German final

Germany are guaranteed another gold and silver medal after Stefan Steinweg and Jens Lehmann advanced through to the gold medal final in the men's individual pursuit. Steinweg was the fastest qualifier in 4.23.08, and Lehmann fourth fastest (4.26.95), but both produced excellent rides in the critical second round to record the best two times.

With the change in the individual pursuit rules to a "sudden death" format, the second round becomes far more important than the qualifying round as there are no semi-finals. After the qualifying round picks the top eight riders, the times from round two are used to determine who will ride for the gold, and who will ride for the bronze. There are no semi-finals.

So, Britain's Rob Hayles who rode a good 4.24.04 to qualify second, ended up with the third fastest time in round two even though he comfortably beat Dutchman Robert Slippens. Hayles will face Francis Moreau (Fra) in the bronze medal ride-off, after Moreau beat Sergio Escobar (Spa).

Women's Sprint

Natalia repeats

The absence of top sprinters, Felicia Ballanger (Fra), Michelle Ferris (Aus) and Oxana Grichina (Rus) has left the women's sprinting competitions wide open at the World's. Yesterday's 500 metre TT winner, Natalia Markovnichenko (Blr) proved her speed again by posting the fastest 200 metre qualifying time in the women's sprint. She rode 11.235 seconds (64.085 km/h) to beat the USA's Jennie Reed and Canadian Lori Ann Muenzer.

In the 1/8 finals, both Markovnichenko and Reed did not have to race, while Muenzer beat the USA's Tanya Lindenmuth, Katrin Meinke (Ger) beat Cuihua Jang (Chn), Celine Nivert beat Magali Faure (both Fra) and Galina Enioukhina beat Svetlana Grankovskaia (both Rus). Grankovskaia and Faure each won their repechage heats, and advance through to tomorrow's quarter finals.

Women's Individual Pursuit

McGregor breaks a long drought

Manchester's Yvonne McGregor scored an impressive hometown victory in the women's individual pursuit, defeating German Judith Arndt in the final by over a second. McGregor rode 3.35.274 to beat Arndt, who had led for the first kilometres. McGregor didn't quite have to pull out a titanic performance as she did in Sydney to beat Sarah Ulmer for the bronze, but nevertheless rode extremely strongly to take the lead with 500 metres to go, giving her a 1.28 second advantage by the finish.

It was not 39 year old McGregor's last race however, as she affirmed that she would defend her title next year in Antwerp before retiring. The individual pursuit medal was Britain's first in this event for 34 years after Beryl Burton won in 1966.

In the other final Marion Clignet was defeated by Russian Elena Tchalykh in 3.37.394 for the bronze medal. Clignet, dual gold medallist last year in the points and pursuit and winner of the points race this year, suffered during yesterday's qualifying rounds and was not able to come close to Tchalykh for the bronze medal.
